Reflective Essay

My first semester at Old Dominion University is coming to an end and I can already tell that I improved dramatically in many different ways. Although I have been learning English in my home country since I was about eight years old, when I first came to ODU my use of English was not really effective. I attended a seven week program for English in the English Language Center at ODU in order to improve my English skills. My first big improvement was seen on my TOEFL score, when I improved from thirty-four to eighty-six points in just two months. That score got me fully admitted to ODU and it was the first step to releasing my stress of learning, speaking and thinking in my second language.

In the first semester, I have been attending a begginers‘ writing class for freshmen. Over the course, we have learned a lot by writing four essays. In the first essay, I wrote about my high school experience and my adaptation to college. My second essay was the most significant to me because I had to describe the role that language plays in my courses I have been taking. Writing that paper helped me think about and learn what I need to do to succeed in college. The third paper was unique to me because I talked about a topic that is very close to me. Lately, I have seen a lot of debates on the internet about golf not being a sport. There is a lot of criticism world-wide that golf should not be considered as a sport, so I tackled the main reasons why I think it is a real sport. The fourth essay talked about taking initiative to register for spring classes. This assignment was fun to write since my registration process took a lot of effort so there was a lot to write about.

Part of our grade in this course included the creation and maintenance of our e-Portfolio in WordPress. E-Portfolio is a web page where individuals or groups can share specific items with others. For our class we were supposed to publish at least three pages. My e-Portfolio consisted of a Home Page and an About Me Page where I talked about myself, my family, the country where I came from and my accomplishments in golf. Another page, UNIV150, included the first draft, the final draft and the comment sheet for essay one. I also discussed how I improved. This Reflective essay will later be part of that page too.

In the classroom, the professor shared a lot of Powerpoint presentations and materials to make us better writers. I have learned much about sentence structure, punctuation, phrasing and also about what it takes to write a good essay. Before this class I often mixed past, present, and future tenses. Now I am much better at grammar usage, punctuation and tenses. My confidence level has grown significantly through-out the semester. This course has set a new foundation for my college writing as I proceed my ODU education.

Overall, the class was entertaining and educational. I think it had the biggest impact on me because of my foreign language. In the beginning the papers were tough, but as the semester progressed they became easier. The average student could complete a two page paper within an hour, but as for myself it could have taken even four to five hours. This was frustrating at times, but it has clearly paid off.

COMMENT SHEET NUMBER ONE

COMPARISON OF FINAL DRAFT ESSAY ONE AND EVALUATED DRAFT ESSAY ONE

Using the scale below, please rate questions one through five. Place the appropriate letter in the blank provided at the end of each question.

A.  strongly disagree

B.  disagree

C. neither agree nor disagree

D.  agree

E. strongly agree

1.  Because I received only minimal guidance from the instructor concerning the initial submission of essay number one, I struggled with the rough draft of the essay.     B

2.  I felt confident about my writing skills when I submitted my final draft of essay one.    D

3.  When I received my evaluated copy of essay number one, I was satisfied with my score.     D

4.  After reviewing the evaluated copy of essay number one, I recognized that many of the weaknesses pointed out were in areas with which I am familiar.      D

5.  I found peer review to be a valuable component of my writing process.      C

After comparing your rough draft to the evaluated final draft of essay one, you should be able to gauge the state of your writing skills at the start of the semester. Provide a well-structured paragraph in response to each of the following (two separate paragraphs).

How did the comparison help you to identify your writing strengths?

Primarily, the comparison helped me to identify my writing weaknesses which I could  learn from. I can almost say that I made weaknesses to my strenghts. Overal, I think I got more confident with using English. I can structure sentences much better than I used to and I also got better with using commas and articles. In my opinion, if I have a good topic, I can create very good essays with straight points.

How did the comparison help you to understand your writing weaknesses?

The comparison helped me a lot to better understand how I should stucture sentences, use grammar, commas and articles. I have been doing several grammatical mistakes such as mixing past and present in the same sentence when just past should have been used.

Did your secondary (high) school experience prepare you adequately for college?

In my home country, the school system is different from the one in the United States. Most schools are public, education is paid for by the state, and schools do not have such a huge number of students. The high school I attended had less than four hundred students, and it provided, in my opinion, a very high level of education, even higher than what I have seen in the US so far. Despite the fact that teachers‘ salaries were quite low, they did an amazing job and taught the students very well. I think that my high school prepared me thoroughly for a Czech college, but a few years ago, nobody anticipated that I will be given a scholarship and attend a US college. That is something that any high school in my country cannot prepare me for.

Writing is the biggest difference between American and Czech schooling system, whereas in my high school in Czech Republic we did not have any regular writing classes. We just had Czech language course, where we learned either grammar or literature, and once in a while, the teacher said that it would be good if we were to write an essay. The only teachers action was to give us topics of an essay and a grade. They have never taught us how to write, maybe because, students can use their own language in a proper way is in Czech considered as a matter of course. The writing seems to me an integral part of operation in American college, which could be a struggle for me because I did not get a lot of practice in my school.

Another big difference is that schools in Czech Republic do not support student-athletes a lot. It is almost impossible to be a good athlete and student at the same time. I am a golf player, and I missed plenty of classes during a school year. It had been a great obstruction to overcome to an understanding with my teachers and to catch up missed classes. That is why I did not create very good study habits. Sometimes, I learned for my tests the day before and didn’t turn my assignments in. Also, the fact that I was the only athlete in my class was pretty demotivating, especially when I saw all of my classmates to be fully prepared for every class. I felt like I was far behind them all the time. Tutors were not provided at my school, so I had to try on my own. Moreover, some teachers were about to cause harm to athletes instead of supporting and helping us to catch up missed classes.

In conclusion, it will be difficult for me to get used to the different system of teaching, same as studying and understanding in a foreign language and being the best athlete at the same time. I hope that the high level of education which i got in my high school will help me to get quickly adjusted to the US college.
